I have a thickened appendix. what could cause this?

Thickened appendix: I assume that you've had an abdominal ct scan because of some abdominal symptoms. In view of your age, I would ask the radiologist and an abdominal surgeon to review your findings to ensure that pathology like inflammatory bowel disease or appendicial growths are not an issue. A referral to a gastroenterologist may also be recommended.
