I had a tooth filled 3mths ago & my gums swelled up. now my dentist says i need a root canal. i cant get into a specialist for a wk. is that to long?

Should be seen now: Not sure by your post if it is the specialist who has no appointments or you who does not have the time. In either case you should be seen as an emergency patient at least to get an antibiotic to control the spread of the infection. Once controlled, you will probably be fine. If not, I'm sure the endodontist has accommodations for emergency situations.
