A member asked:

How do paraplegics and quadplegics avoid pulmonary embolism while many non-paralyzed people get it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

They dont: Pulmonary embolism(PE) is the result of a clot in the leg or groin. The fact is that this is a major problem for patients with acute and chronic spinal cord injury. It is not uncommon despite both mechanical(pumps, support hose) and medication(heparin, warfarin) for these patients to develop a clot because of their immobility. It remains among the top 5 serious consequences of spinal cord injury.
