Situation based: When the rabies status of the animal is unknown the issue is situation based. Local county health departments keep track of rabies activity in their region & the animals involved. If the animal can be captured & monitored, a few days wait is okay as the rabid animal would be very sick or dead within 3-4 days. If no capture is possible, the series is started immediately.
