A member asked:

My husband (53) got a a1c test. doctor told him it's diabetes type 1. is it possible to know which type is it with only one test?!?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Missing data: Type 1 DM is a diabetes usually diagnosed in 10 year old kids who lose their ability to make ANY insulin. Type 2 is generally found in overweight or older adults who can still make some insulin. The A1C tests just correlated with the blood sugar levels over the preceding 3 months. When high it suggests an abnormal glucose metabolism but does not give a cause. I think someone is confused.
