A member asked:

Good evening doctors. i had bloodwork. my a1c was 5.1, which i think is good, but my fasting glucose was 101, which i think is pre-diabetes. how do you interpret these very seemingly different results?

The FBS of 101 is considered borderline for pre-diabetes and the HgbA1-C is high normal. All of this is consistent with a trend toward glucose metabolism dysfunction, but is not inevitable. Dietary and exercise measures may stabilize all of this. If you are overweight, handle this ASAP. Discuss all of this with your doctor.

By A1C criteria you do not have Prediabetes. If the fasting glucose remains at these levels you have impaired fasting glucose. This condition could lead to Prediabetes or Diabetes.

Your interpretation of your results are correct - you are headed toward glucose metabolism problems. The fantastic news is that this is COMPLETELY REVERSIBLE at this point. Lose some weight, begin or continue exercise 5 times a week, limit carbohydrate intake, and in 6 months these labs could be completely normal! Best of luck, grab this opportunity to change your path before it's too late...
