Not safe to smoke: A person can recover from a smoking addiction. It takes a strong commitment, a healthy attitude towards life, support from friends and family (staying away from others who are smoking), and close follow-up with one's primary care doctor (who can help with temporary medications and nicotine patches, if needed).

Never: It's never safe to smoke. Smoking can, and probably will, kill you. And usually the path to death is quite painful. If you develop lung cancer, for example, you slowly drown as fluids fill your lungs. As to the healing post-surgery, smoking will delay recovery. It's already been 42 hours, try for 43, then 44, and so on. If you've managed the first 42 hours you're almost over the hump.
