Infection: If your tooth was abscessed prior to its removal, infection may remain in your jaw for several weeks. Antibiotics will help your body fight the infection & allow healing to occur.

Inflammation: Sometimes, inflammation follows infection, which can increase the levelmof pain. Nsaid's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) can decrease the inflammation, which can decrease the pain.
