Very unlikely but...: Rabies virus lives in saliva. It does not survive long outside a mammal's body but might survive a couple hours, esp. if away from sunlight. While almost always transmitted via bite it could theoretically enter a dog's body through the mucous membranes of the mouth. However, the odds of this seem small and, if your dog has been vaccinated for rabies it is very unlikely your dog would be infected.
