Rarely if ever done: The tonsils are a valuable part of a kids immune system. They tend to grow faster than a kid until age 6-8 , slow & stop. By age 16 most kids have outgrown their tonsils & they are relatively small. The few reasons for removal include sleep apnea, 5 or more strep infections/yr & a tonsilar abscess. I would never remove them just to do it, nor would an insurer in the US ever approve /pay for it.
