Depends: CMV contracted after birth typically has much less severe consequences. However, congenital cmv (contracted during pregnancy) can have devastating effects including severe brain damage. My daughter had congenital cmv and received tx after birth due to multiple problems. She has done well since but tx usually needs to happen right after birth to have any effect.
