Long time: I wouldn't necessarily say that your GABA receptors need to "heal" as much as they simply may need to get out of the Lunesta tolerance. Because you have been on the medication for several years, it may take several monthly to finally ease your neurons out of the desire to have that stimulation. In the meantime, you can simply wait or use an alternate med for sleep (like melatonin).

Not the same for all: The initial physical withdrawals should end perhaps in just a few days especially as far as being “up”. The psychological withdrawals may last much much longer and should be treated by seeing a therapist. The receptors may take 6-12 to completely function normally . Those who drink less and don’t take other “benzo” Type meds or other sedative hypnotics or other sleeping pills will heal faster.
