General rule: Many who work in higher risk settings get the rabies series as a pre-exposure preventative. Protective levels of antibody are expected to last for 2 years when followup testing is often done. If at or above protective level a booster is optional at that point. However, due to the seriousness of the disease & universally fatal outcome a booster is usually given with any valid exposure.
