Medications: Medications can often solve many medical issues, but if your gingival inflammation is due to irritation from calculus deposits, then your dentist/hygienist will need to scrape off those deposits. If it has been more than six months since your last professional dental cleaning, it's time to call for an appointment.

Bleeding gums: Hard brush bandages gums. If you are not flossing you are only partially cleaning. Bleeding gums usually signify infection and inflammation. Add to that the serious irritation from smoking and possibly tarter under your gums, you need to see your Dentist as soon as possible. Your Dentist will determine the extent of your gum disease and the proper treatment. Sorry, pills won't fix this.
