Depends on the cause: Swelling in the legs and ankles can have many causes, but one common cause is venous insufficiency, a disorder of the veins that results in an inefficient return of blood to the heart. It's not life or limb threatening typically, but can cause debilitating swelling of the legs. Consult with a vascular surgeon who can do a simple test for venous reflux. There are many different ways to treat this.
