Bright red ?: Bright red blood on the outside of a stool in a constipated person suggests a scratch/tear in the tissues of the outlet. (anal fissure) Dark blood mixed well within the stool suggests a bacterial infection like salmonella. Stomach cancer might trigger a bleed but would have coffee ground/black tarry stool.
