IUD and cramps: No it is not normal for you to have cramps after having the IUD placed over a year ago. And the malodorous discharge is not normal, too. I recommend an in office exam to determine why you are in such pain and maybe this will alleviate your escalating anxiety and depression.

Not normal: I usually counsel patients that they may have up to 6 months of irregular bleeding after the Mirena insertion. 13 months is too long. Please see the doctor to have it checked and rule out an infection. Regarding the mood changes, it is so difficult to tease out the typical post partum mood fluctuations from possible IUD side effects. I cannot say for sure if the mood issues are from the IUD.

IUD: bleeding: Any IUD can be pushed into the narrow cervical canal, where it can cause prolonged bleeding and cramps, especially if inserted in the immediate post C/S time, since strong uterine contractions can dislocate even a properly inserted IUD. See your provider who inserted the IUD for an exam and possible removal. This pattern is not normal.

No Not Normal: The Mirena IUD is a very safe highly effective contraceptive option, and is also indicated to improve heavy menstrual bleeding. It can take 3 - 6 months for bleeding to improve, but by then 95% of women note significantly reduced menstrual bleeding, and 24%+ become amenorrheic (no periods at all). Your symptoms are definitely not normal. See a Clinician who deals with IUDs asap to see if in place
