Gone vs. not gone: How does a patient know his strep throat infection is gone? Because it is not possible to tell when the infection is truly gone, a patient should follow his doctor's instructions and take 10 days of the antibiotics. After that, if the patient thinks the strep throat has recurred, he can see his doctor again.

Feel better vs gone: You can "feel better" with strep throat whether it is treated or not. The real problem comes later when a quirk in the immune system creates antibodies that can attack your heart, kidneys or brain. (rheumatic fever) It takes a sustained 10 days of antibiotics to stop antibody formation & kill all the germs. Don't try to save some med for your next sore throat, the person you hurt is you.
