1 month old (5 weeks on wednesday) there is an outbreak of pertussis 2-3 hours away from our county in nc. should we get her pertussis vax at 6 weeks? if we do will her immune response from the vax be robust enough to be effective?

You can: however, the immune system takes around 3 weeks to start producing protective antibodies, and will need at least 3 doses to have enough to ward off an infection, reason vaccination starts early, so by age 6 months an infant would have mounted a protective titer of antibodies, as the antibodies she has right now from mother would wane by that time. She is currently protected, wish you all wellness

OK to wait until 2 m: Pertussis infection in infants is largely related to exposure from family members and other close contacts. Most important is that all caretakers and siblings that are in school or daycare be immunized with Tdap. A booster during pregnancy protects mother & gives higher antibodies to the baby via placenta. Premies, however, do not benefit as much.
