Indirect via fluid: Increased intake of salt results in increased salt in the blood vessels. As a result, water tends to follow the salt. The net effect is higher volume in the blood. This can increase blood pressure which is a risk factor for heart disease. If a person has underlying heart failure, a higher intravascular volume can exacerbate symptomatic heart failure which may require hospitalization.
