The gauze: is used TEMPORARILY to stop the bleeding at the site of the extraction. Your son shouldn't need it 24 hours after the fact!! If he is still bleeding a call to the Oral Health Professional who did the extraction is indicated! Hope this is helpful! Dr Z

That's what it's for: Immediately after surgery the patient should bite on a folded piece of gauze, placing pressure on the surgical site. The pressure helps slow and stop bleeding. The gauze should be changed every 20 minutes until no more bleeding. All this should be in the verbal and written directions given to you by your specialist Oral Surgeon.

Yes: the intent is to bite down on the gauze placed over the wound to apply pressure thus minimizing bleeding. Use ice packs on outside of face on/off 10-15 min intervals. A moistened tea bag can also be used in place of gauze.
