Dentist: I would be curious as to the directions that your dentist gave you regarding these very things. Typically you keep the gauze in to keep up with the bleeding. As the bleeding slows down you don't need to change the gauze as frequently. The numbness in your lower lips I assume is from the local anesthesia they used during the procedure and should wear off certainly by the end of the day.
