A member asked:

Considering 2nd toe amputation instead of bunion surgery to include shortening 2nd and 3rd toes. what are the negatives? will bunion become worse?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Surgical repair: My usual tendency would be to surgically repair verses amputation. in very severe cases I will recommend amputation, but this is very rare. With amputation you will continue to have progression of the bunion and hammertoes and deviation to the 3rd, 4th, and 4th toes. The amputation can also lead to increased pressure under certain bones in the ball area of the foot. Hope this helps. Dr.A
