Tape or Splint?: Taping is ok. It requires daily reapplication and leaves a sticky residue on the taped digit(s). There are a number of commercially available splints on the market, which would probably serve you much better. Look in to jacoby or budin splints. These can be used without adhesive and will help adjust the alignment of your toes as swelling goes down.

Taped toe: You can try for 8 weeks after the surgery but after that it generally doesn't help. You may need additional surgery.

Toe: Yes you can tape it but also check with your surgeon, it could be something else then the way you held your foot.
