A member asked:

Does macrobid help kill e.coli 100,000 colony (showed up urinalysis)? can it help treat kidney infection? feel like flank feels bloated, irritated.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bladder, not kidney: If E Coli, or any other bacteria causing urinary infection, are sensitive to Macrobid, it will kill and eliminate them if taken properly. Sensitivity is determined through a two day culture and sensitivity test in the lab. Macrobid concentrates in the urine, but does not achieve significant tissue levels. It therefore works well for bladder infections(UTI), but not kidney tissue infections.
