Possibly: In general Macrobid is good choice for treatment of a urinary tract (bladder) infection. Untreated utis can progress to kidney infections (pyelonephritis) and may still be treated with Macrobid if the antibiotic sensitivities of the culprit bacterial infection are known. As always if a patient is not improving on a given regimen then the treatment must be re-evaluated promptly.

No.: Macrobid, or nitrofurantoin, is a poor choice for most kidney infections such as pyelonephritis and renal abscess. Is does not acheive high enough concentration in the tissues to treat the infection adequately. It does work well for uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections. If you are on Nitrofurantoin and develop a kidney infection, see your physician immediately.
