Can i be prescribed medication for anxiety and mild depression from a normal gp?

GP & psych meds: A GP can prescribe meds for anxiety and mild depression; but not all may be comfortable doing so. Discuss with your doctor. Ask for a referral if he/she is not willing to prescribe. Also, look online for mental health professionals near you. If you've not been properly diagnosed, an intake with a mental health professional would be a good start. Keep your pcp informed. Hope this helps

Yes: To answer your question in simple terms - “yes”. However, if the GP perceives there’s more to treat than simple depression and anxiety, referral to a mental health professional may be required.

Anxiety/depression.: General practitioners are capable of prescribing medications initially for anxiety and depression. A psychiatrist would be helpful if initial treatment options prescribed by your GP do not help.

DEPRESSION: You are describing depressive symptoms with anxiety. First have a physical exam to rule out a physical problem. Please consult with a Clinical Psychologist for psychotherapy to help you with ZOOM.com sessions. Research indicates with psychotherapy you can change & find better coping mechanisms. If there is a biological reason you are depressed please see a Psychiatrist for medication.
