First time?: mostly it is going to be a pigment issue BUT if this is the first time you've got this, then metal deposition (lead, iron, others) could do it. It isn't common. Oh, is it across or up and down like a line? A line can be a very serious condition (pigment making cancer).

Nail lines: Dark lines running down a nail in black people over age 20 is usually normal (linear melanoychia). Black stripes down one nail could be a subungual hematoma. However black stripes could also be due to cancer (subungual melanoma). Get it checked if concerned.
