Black stool: Black stool can be caused by bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, taking iron or taking peptobismol or kaopectate. The presence of mucus in the stool occurs with irritable bowel syndrome or mild rectal inflammation. A simple stool test in the physicians office can detect occult blood in stool. If positive, consult a gastroenterologist for evaluation.
