You may not be: able to tell if you have a broken bone (unless you have part of a bone that is sticking out). An Xray is needed for accurate diagnosis. This should be accompanied by medical history and physical examination.

Hard to: It really can be difficult to distinguish between a sprain and a fracture. That is why, even as an orthopedic surgical specialist, I usually will get an X-ray if there is any question.
