A member asked:

Had frequent heartburn ages 22-32, lost weight & no heartburn at 35. now no symptoms. should i ever check for barrett's esophagus out of caution?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Barrett's: Whether to screen for Barrett's esophagus is controversial. Some groups suggest screening patients with several risk factors for developing esophageal adenocarcinoma (eg, gastroesophageal reflux disease, age >50 years, male sex, elevated body mass index with an abdominal pattern of fat distribution). Please discuss it more with your physician.
