A member asked:

My 3 year old son has a bad cough, he was playing in cold water today.. when do i know if it's pneumonia? ..

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Doctor can evaluate: A child with a "bad cough" should be seen by his doctor. Common colds usually cause a mild cough, not a "bad cough". A bad cough can be bronchiolitis (due to RSV virus), asthma symptoms, croup (due to infection at the voicebox area), bronchitis (due to bacterial or viral infection), pneumonia, or an accidentally swallowed toy or object. Playing in water, cold or warm, does not cause pneumonia.
