The : The best ways to treat a cough are: -drink plenty of fluids -keep a glass of water by his bed at night -use a humidifier if the air is dry -eat a spoonful of honey, or drink apple juice, or chicken broth to help with any "coughing jags" -research shows that these methods are as effective as over the counter cough medicines. If he experiences any respiratory distress, he needs immediate medical attention. The signs of respiratory distress are: -rapid breathing (more than 60 times a minute) -grunting or gasping with breathing -flaring of the nostrils -working hard and using extra muscles to breathe such as sucking in at the neck or under the rib cage -blue or dusky coloring -change in speech or level of alertness reasons to call his doctor are: - fever - unable/refusal to drink - concern for dehydration - a cough that isn't improving after a week.
