I've had what i thought was a cold sore for at least a month. it scabbed up about a month ago and is not going away. could this be something else?

Absolutely: Wounds or sores that do not heal in few weeks need to be usually biopsied and/or treated. Do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist or your PCP to further coordinate this.
