Microcytic anemia: Iron deficiency causes a "microcytic anemia", meaning the red blood cells are smaller (measure by the mean corpuscular volume or MCV). If there is simultaneously a macrocytic anemia, which can be caused by low folate or low B12, then the average MCV could be normal but there would be both smaller and larger cells (and the spread of cell sizes, measured by the RDW would go up).
