Good question : Ask your physician. The answer depends on what the amount of damage was, what the diagnosis was, what the uextent was etc.

Shake, rattle, roll.: There is ankle surgery and there is ankle surgery. Depending on the extent of the damage and repair, the time until resolution varies greatly. Swelling and pain can be a sign of some degree of instability. Ask the surgeon as to his take on your healing.

Varies: It really depends on the nature of the condition and the surgery you had. Don't hesitate to discuss directly with your physician.
