Be patient: Make sure your surgeon is fine with you walking in a shoe only 5 weeks after surgery. If so, it is very normal to walk with a limp so soon after surgery. The swelling will last quite a while. I tell patients to expect some swelling after ankle surgery for at least 6 months, but up to 1 year after surgery is not unusual. Elevating your ankle above heart level can help reduce swelling.
