The active: ingredients in Pico-Salax, largely used in Canada, are sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide and citric acid. Together these work as a strong purgative/substance to empty bowels. These preps usually take over an hour to drink, and can begin working nearly immediately or soon. The manufacturer says "the effects...may last for a few hours after you finish it." I would say usually <6, but up to 12.
