Usually automatic: Control of your breathing is primarily automatic, involuntary and continuous. You can voluntarily breathe in and out, but you do not have to consciously think about it. The respiratory center knows how to control the breathing rate and depth. Various substances such as narcotic pain relievers can alter the respiratory drive and lead to dangerously low breathing rates at excessive doses.
