In a typical cataract surgery, does the ophthalmologist give a needle anesthesia injection directly into the eye before surgery?

No: Most ophthalmologists use topical anesthesia that utilizes eye drops and ointment for anesthesia. In addition, during the surgery, many surgeons will squirt a little bit of anesthesia into the front of the eye near the start. Best wishes.
