I just had an upper endoscopy last week and now my doctor is ordering an upper gi with barium. why would he order this less invasive test?

See below: Upper GI with barium can reveal abnormalities in a much longer part of the intestine than can upper endoscopy. Endoscopes can usually not view most of the small intestine. If the suspected lesion is beyond duodenum, upper GI with barium is the appropriate study. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. Get HPV vaccine, if you are under 27 years of age.

Don't know.: I don't know what you're going through symptom-wise. We would generally consider the EGD more informative than the upper GI series, unless your doctor is looking for something more functional than anatomic and needs an assessment in real time.
