Look again.: First of all, all nails are dead. When the nail becomes heavily infected or damaged by trauma, it has a very different look than when normal. If the nail was removed and there was no bleeding, then the nail was ready to come off. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "seeing into your toe". Immediately below the nail plate is the bed. If the bed was torn off then you might see the bone.
