Is this viral: A large amount of colds and sore throats are due to viral infections, unless a rapid strep test and/or a throat culture identified this illness as streptococcal pharyngitis. If no tests were done and an antibiotic was prescribed, symptoms may persist because the illness is viral in origin and not bacterial, in which case the antibiotics are unnecessary. Viral infections will run their course.
