A 16-year-old female asked:
Symptoms: cough, runny nose, sore throat, green mucus, holes in tonsils, vomitting. what could this be? my boyfriend believes they are tonsil stones, but he hasn't had the symptoms and he doesn't want to go to the doctor. i believe it's tonsillitis.

Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus, influenza (Tamiflu may be needed), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, is with moderate or high fever, or with much coughing or worrisome symptoms. Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can lessen pain.
