A member asked:

My mother was in hospital recently & recovered quite well. i noticed a nurse administer antibiotics through a canulla. there were no tubes attached to the canulla at the time. it took perhaps 2 minutes to do. is this what is called an iv push?

Yes: The nurse usually has a reference guide which tells them what can be pushed and what needs to be infused

YES: A sterile plastic tube through which medication can be administered slowly ( (slow IV push ) or rapid line for emergency medicine.

Yes: assuming that the cannula had one end inserted into a vein, then by definition an I (intra) V (venous) administration, and a push(2 minutes) rather than a drip (more tubes, more time). Sterile procedure should be used for such administration.
