HCM: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is caused by a mutation in a gene for a muscle protein. One copy of the gene can cause trouble so each child of an affected parent has 50% chance of inheritance. Screening with EKG and Echo is pretty sensitive. Sudden death is the most feared complication. Determining your risk requires a complete history, beyond what fits in these little boxes.
