A member asked:

My father died of liver cirrhosis due to alcoholism. someone suggested it can be genetic. i drink occasionally, am i more exposed to it than my peers?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stop worrying: There may be a genetic component since a majority of problem drinkers never get cirrhosis. No risk gene has been identified. If you drink reasonably, you will not get cirrhosis from it, period. I'm sorry about your dad. If you feel yourself losing control with respect to alcohol, then stop for good. You won't be missing much. Otherwise, it's your decision.
