Sounds like neuritis: It sounds like you irritated the nerve running on the top of your foot going down to the great toe. This could happen from tieing your shoes to tight or injury or from a bone spur. if you relieve pressure on the top of the foot this should give relief.

L4/5 Disc herniation: Studies show that the L4/5 intervertebral disc is the most common location for herniatition of an intervertebral disc. The L5 nerve root compression causes pain and is associated with paresthesias in the big toe/top of foot. You may have weakness of big toe extension. Please see your MD conservative treatment is rest/NSAIDs/muscle relaxant and then referral to physical therapy and orthopaedics.
