Bowel frequency: Patients who take metformin frequently complain of gastrointestinal distress similar to your symptoms. There may, of course be some other cause, so you should definitely discuss these symptoms with your doctor.
Some patients report improvement on the XR version of metformin, so that might be a good alternative. Do not stop any of your medications without your doctor's advice.
