Normal: The colon (and rectum) absorb water. The stool coming out first has had more internal contact time with the colon lining, thus more water reabsorption; leading to harder stools compared to the stool that is evacuated after this. This is normal. Stool softners would make the harder stool softer, but really not needed unless it bothers you, or it is causing hemorrhoids.
